Painotusryhmien vierailu Metropoliaan

Medialukiolaiset tutustumassa Metropolian elokuva- ja tv-alan studiotyöskentelyyn

Torstaina 19.5. medialukion painotusryhmät 21M ja 21N lähtivät tilausbussissa kohti Arabian Metropoliaa, missä pääsimme tutustumaan koulun monenkirjavaan tarjontaan. 

Ennen kierroksen alkua pääsimme syömään Metropolian ruokalassa, Luovassa. Ruokailun ja pienen infohetken jälkeen meidät jaettiin pienempiin ryhmiin ja koulun oppilaiden johdolla lähdimme tutustumaan Metropolian toimintaan erilaisten rastien kautta. Esimerkiksi elokuva- ja televisioalan etapilla pääsi kokeilemaan niin kuvaamista, äänittämistä kuin näyttelemistäkin, koulun musiikkitila Soivassa päästiin arvailemaan klassikkosäveltäjien sävellyksiä, koulun tekniikan etapilla pääsimme kokeilemaan koulun käytössä olevaa laitteistoa, opiskelijahallitus Metkan etapilla heiteltiin kirvestä ja mocap-studiossa päästiin ihailemaan motion capture -teknologiaa. Lisäksi koulussa oli näyttelytila, jossa oli esillä eri alojen töitä. 

Henkilökohtaisesti mieleen jäi moni asia, joista päällimmäisenä ilmapiiri. Koulun ihmisistä välittyi selvä yhteisöllisyys ja rakkaus lajiin. Etenkin näyttelytilassa oli esillä kauniita opiskelijoiden tekemiä töitä, joita olisi voinut katsoa ikuisuuksiin kyllästymättä. Myös esimerkiksi Metkan paikalla olleista jäsenistä välittyi halukkuus ja mielenkiinto olla paikalla. Mieleen jäi myös paikan persoonallisuus. Jokaisella paikalla on oma persoonallinen “tunnelmansa”, jota ei löytynyt muualta koulusta.

Ylipäätään vierailusta jäi positiivinen fiilis. Oli hieno kokemus ja oppimistilanne päästä tutustumaan ammattikorkeaan. Itse ainakin harkitsen Metropoliaan hakemista, jos ei parempaa vaihtoehtoa tule vastaan.

Itävaltalaisen opettajaopiskelijan Angelikan ajatuksia koulusta

Hei! My name is Angelika and until Christmas I was an exchange student at the University of Helsinki. I am a teacher trainee from Austria for Mathematics and English and I am about to finish my Master’s degree. For my Master’s thesis I am investigating internal differentiation processes in English lessons in the Austrian and Finnish language classroom. To gain a better perspective on how differentiation is implemented in the Finnish high school system, I fortunately got the chance to observe multiple lessons, talk to teachers and students as well as conduct interviews with several teachers at Medialukio. 

Internal differentiation – or the ways in which teachers adapt their teaching to the various different needs of leaners in a heterogeneous classroom – has always been a topic of my interest since differentiation is not only an educational issue but also a political and social question. Recent developments in Austria as well as Finland have pushed towards inclusive education, which means that learners of all needs (including children with learning disabilities or language difficulties) should learn together.  

However, there are major differences in how Austria and Finland implement the principle of inclusivity in their school system.  One of the most obvious and most radical differences is the moment when learners are allocated to different school types depending on their previous school performance. While in Finland all students attend the same school types up until the 9^th grade (primary and middle school: alakoulu and yläkoulu), students in Austria are allocated to different school types after the 4^th grade usually depending on their academic achievement. Despite this process of early external differentiation in Austria, the classrooms in Austria remain very heterogenous. Especially in urban areas – much like in the Helsinki region – many learners struggle with the language of instruction as a result of the diverse multicultural background of learners. 

To overcome potential difficulties that arise with teaching a classroom with students with mixed abilities, teachers develop their own strategies. For my Master’s thesis I am interested in the different viewpoints that teachers in Finnish and Austrian high schools have on heterogeneous classrooms and differentiation.  I have already conducted several interviews with teachers at Medialukio and will now conduct interviews with Austrian teachers, which I will then analyze.  

I feel very lucky that I had the opportunity to experience a bit of the daily school life at Medialukio, which gave me a practical glimpse of what the school life there is like. I have had so many interesting and informative conversations with students and teachers there and I am so grateful for this experience. 

Erasmus virtual mobility to Poland Jan 26th-28th

So we were supposed to go to Poland this winter. All of us did quite a lot of preparation for the trip, in fact we had had a prep course for the mobility already a year ago, and we were really excited to see what Poland and its culture were about. But sadly we never did get to experience Poland in person so a virtual trip took place in late January and I must say that it was better than I expected. All of us learned quite a bit about Polish school system and culture and Poland in general. We visited our destination, the town of Chelm, the old chalk mine, the state museum at Majdanek. We also worked on our project – Europa Trivia Game – testing our Kahoot questions on various school subjects. We Finns seemed to be unbeatable on English quizzes, whereas the Spanish team was good at history quizzes. That was the reason why I originally wanted to go to Poland so the virtual trip was a success even though all of us wanted to see and experience Poland with our own eyes and not through our computers.

Since they hosted a trip for us we have to host a trip for them as well. So we are going to host a virtual trip for those who were supposed to come to Finland in March. I’ll try to get the most out of it by doing my bit in the programme which will be interactive and informative, presenting  the highlights of Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Media Arts, Finland in a nutshell and all the tourist attractions we would have visited in reality. In addition, we will introduce our Erasmus guests to the Finnish way of life and some famous Finns.

Virtuaalivierailuilla Haaga-Heliassa ja Aalto-yliopistossa

Helsingin medialukiossa on syksyn aikana päästy kokeilemaan uutta teknologiaa yhteistyössä Elisan, Haaga-Helian ja Aalto yliopiston kanssa. Ideana kokeiluissa on ollut testata 5G-yhteyden ja 360°-kameran soveltuvuutta virtuaalivierailuihin näin etäaikana.

23.10.2020 kolme koulumme opiskelijaa ja yksi opettaja suuntasivat Haaga-Helian Pasilan toimipisteeseen pelaamaan talousmatematiikkaan liittyvää Pakohuone-peliä, jota johti Haaga-Helian puolesta laskentatoimen lehtori Jere Peipponen. Elisalta paikan päälle tuotiin 360°-kamera, joka 5G-yhteyden kautta lähetti kuvaa koululle. Ryhmän muut opiskelijat olivat seurasivat peliä koululta. Opiskelijat pääsivät siis koulun luokasta näkemään pelitilanteen ja auttamaan Pakohuone-peliä pelaavia opiskelijoita.

28.10.2020 vuorossa oli virtuaalivierailu Aalto-yliopiston Satelliittilaboratorioon. Avaruusfysiikan professori Esa Kallio ja tohtoriopiskelija Leo Nyman kertoivat Aallon satelliittihankkeista ja avaruustutkimuksesta, ja jälleen 360°-kameralla kuvattua esitystä seurattiin Medialukiossa livenä VR-laseilla ja huipputarkalla 8K-näytöllä. Medialukiolaiset pääsivät läheltä katsomaan, millaisia satelliitteja Aallossa on valmistettu. Tällä hetkellä Aallossa kehitellään Aalto-3-nanosatelliittia.

10.11.2020 yhteys koululle otettiin jälleen Haaga-Heliasta, mutta tällä kertaa 3D-laboratoriosta. Heikki Hietala esitteli koulun päässä virtuaalivierailua seuranneille opiskelijoille 3D-teknologian hienouksia. Opiskelijat pääsivät näkemään mitä kaikkea 3D-tulostimella pystyy tekemään, kun apuna käytetään Blender-mallinnusohjelmaa – vain mielikuvitus on rajana. 

Ilman pieniä teknisiä ongelmia ei tälläkään kertaa säästytty, mutta joka tapauksessa kokeilu herätti ideoita ja mielikuvia teknologian mahdollisuuksista ja etäyhteyksien käytöstä opetuksessa.

Overcoming obstacles of orientation

Which is worse? To build 17 years of life and than leave it behind for a year or to build one year of life and leave it behind forever? A year ago I had to make the biggest decision of my life. I had to choose between staying home and finishing high school earlier with all my friends or to take a risk and follow my heart to an exchange year in America. 

It was always my number one dream to attend high school in America. Ever since I was a little girl I dreamed about traveling. How someday I would have a normal life and a stable career while living in my dream country. My point is that I wanted to go to America badly. The one and only place you hear all the stories about. 

I knew I would be taking a big risk and It wouldn’t be easy. Could a small girl like me survive such a thing? Could my parents survive it? What about all my friends? Would I lose them all? I wasn’t sure if I was mature enough. I told myself that it’s never going to happen. I thought it was one of those things you tell yourself maybe someday, without really thinking of actually doing it.

One day I was sitting in a bus and a young girl sat next to me. She seemed full of joy and excitement. I asked the girl what she was so happy about. She didn’t even hesitate. She started to explain me all about how she got accepted to be an exchange student in Spain. She told me everything about how she had always wanted to travel to Spain and now she gets to live there for an year. As she told me this I started to think that maybe I could do the same thing. The only problem was that I would have to convince my mom that it would be a good idea to send her youngest daughter to the other side of the world all alone. I spend months trying to come up with ideas to convince my parents that it would be a good idea for me to apply to be an exchange student. I started to watch a lot of blogs and youtubers what previous exchange students had written. I even shared couple of them with my parents so that they could see and hear about other people’s experiences of how fast you can actually learn the new language and the benefits of being exchange student later in life when it’s time to apply for a job. My friends would even describe me as being obsessed with reading and learning about other kids experiences.

When the time finally came I couldn’t wait to meet my new host parents and start the year. I was told before that I shouldn’t make any expectations for the year based on other people’s experiences, because every experience is different.

 I got myself a new group of amazing people I get to call my friends, a new family in a completely different culture, and I got to learned a new language. Although I had had some classes of English language in Finland earlier I would still say that the language barrier was probably the hardest thing I have had to overcome. I remember being so frustrated everyday with having to think and talk everything in English. Overcoming the language barrier was what made America feel like home. 

I am now eight months back home in Finland. A year in America gave me so much to appreciate and so many new amazing memories to remember. New perspectives of life and new ways of thinking. I learned how to be independent and how to take care of others as well as myself.  I noticed a lot of differences in the culture and the people. I’m not scared to express my feelings anymore. I grew up physically and mentally. I learned to respect what I and what others have. I am very lucky to have this experience what a lot of people can only dream of. What I appreciate the most about this whole experience is the fact that I was able to rebuild a new life from a scratch.

Medialukion alumnit esittäytyvät

Olen Stella Haponen, vuoden 2011 ylioppilas. Aloitin opiskelut Koillis-Helsingin lukiossa 2008 ja valmistuin 2011, jolloin lukion nimi oli vaihdettu Helsingin medialukioksi.

Lukioaikoina olin keskiverto-oppilas ja kuitenkin pitkän matematiikan luokalla. Valitsin pitkän matematiikan, sillä pidän haasteista ja olin yläasteella kehittynyt siinä huomattavasti. Parasta lukioaikana oli pitkän matematiikan opettajat, erityisesti Sami Murtoniemi ja Jyrki Rauhalinna, jotka pitivät mielenkiintoa matematiikkaan yllä. Minusta on tärkeää, että opettajat nauttivat työstään, sillä se heijastuu myös opiskelijoihin. Erityiskiitos täytyy antaa Minna Reenilälle, joka sai minut innostumaan ruotsin kielestä. Minna opetti minulle myös venäjää ja järjesti jopa kahdesti reissun Pietariin, jotta oppisimme tuntemaan kulttuuria ja puhumaan venäjää.

Lukioaikana suoritin myös monta kuvaamataidon kurssia. Koulutukseni veikin minut luovalle alalle ja valmistuin Metropolia AMK:sta teolliseksi muotoilijaksi. Tällä hetkellä ammattinimikkeeni on Service & UX Designer ja olen töissä konsulttiyrityksessä, jossa kehitämme ja toteutamme erinäisiä digitaalisia palveluita esim. applikaatioita ja verkkopalveluita. Työhöni kuuluu palveluiden kehittäminen ja suunnittelu eli käytännössä suunnittelen miten palvelu toimii ja miltä se näyttää.

Lukioaikana en vielä tiennyt mitä haluaisin opiskella, mutta minulle erityisessä avainroolissa oli esite jatkokoulutuksista. Esite auttoi ymmärtämään millaisia eri ammatteja ja koulutusaloja ylipäätänsä on. Suosittelen ottamaan selvää mitä mahdollisia ammatteja ja koulutusaloja on olemassa, sillä osa voi olla sellaisia, joista ei ole koskaan kuullutkaan. Minä en ollut kuullut teollisesta muotoilusta, mutta onneksi nyt tiedän mitä se on.

Olen Ia Nissinen 27-vuotta ja opiskelen tällä hetkellä Turun AMK:ssa teatteri-ilmaisun ohjaajaksi, painotun opiskeluissani esiintyjyyteen. Opiskelujen ohella tanssin, laulan sekä harrastan ilma-akrobatiaa. Ennen nykyistä kouluani opiskelin useamman vuoden näyttelijäntyötä kansanopistossa ja tein töitä niin R-kioskin kassalla kuin tuotannonassistenttina Tapanilaisessa Teatteri Tuikkeessa. ”Taiteilijanelämän” keskellä tuijotan myös mielelläni tuntikausia Netflixiä poikaystäväni kanssa, koira kainalossa.

Opiskelin Melussa vuosina 2008-2011. Parhaimmat muistoni liittyvät vahvasti kaakaokahviin, tupakkaan ja muutamaan hyvään kaveriin. Se, että norkoilimme tupakkapaikalla röökit suussa, kahvit kädessä ja puhuimme päivän ”polttavista aiheista”, ei tietenkään ollut kovin tuotteliasta tai fiksua, mutta ne hetket olivat minulle tärkeitä. Lukio oli minulle isolta osin etsimistä ja ihmisenä kasvun aikaa. Olin ja olen edelleen suhteellisen ujon puoleinen ja peruskoulun aikana tuntui siltä, että olin vakiintunut tietynlaiseksi luokkakavereideni silmissä. Uusi iso lukio mahdollisti minulle itseni uudelleen ”brändäämisen” ja sen että uudet ihmiset, itseni mukaan lukien, tutustuivat erilaiseen minään. Mieleen on myös jäänyt tekniikkaryhmä, ilmaisutaidon kurssit Johanna Paalasen johdolla sekä Liisalukiomaassa -musikaali.

Terveisinä haluaisin sanoa ensin pari kliseetä; usko unelmiisi, uskalla olla oma itsesi ja älä anna periksi. Näiden lisäksi haluan muistuttaa, että on myös tosi ookoo olla tietämättä vielä mitä haluaa tehdä elämällään lukion jälkeen. On ookoo opiskella hetki jotain alaa ja sitten huomata, ettei se tunnukaan omalta ja vaihtaa toiseen ja vaihtaa vielä uudestaankin jos on tarve. On myös ookoo tietää tasan tarkkaan mitä haluaa tehdä lukion jälkeen ja mennä täysiä sitä kohti.

Zagrebin debattimatka pähkinänkuoressa

Helsingin Medialukion järjestämällä yhdistelmäkurssilla oli mahdollisuus päästä väittelemään kansainvälisessä tapahtumassa, Zagrebissa. Melusta lähti Kroatiaan edustamaan 12 oppilasta ja kaksi opettajaa, joista oppilaat olivat jaettu kolmeen debattiryhmään. Suunnitelma oli matkustaa Kroatiaan viikko ennen WHO:n (World Holidays Open) 2019 kilpailua, harjoitellaksemme kilpailua varten.

Päivät olivat hektisiä: Aamusta menimme Zagrebin yliopiston biokemian laitokselle harjoittelemaan debatointia, jonka jälkeen Laura Vuorela esitteli ja antoi tiukkaa analyysiä Zagrebin kulttuurista, historiasta sekä infrastruktuurista. Tämän jälkeen oma aika alkoi, joka suurimmaksi osaksi oli debattimuistiinpanojen hiomista. Kuitenkin myös hauskanpito Kroatian pääkaupungin uumenissa oli välttämätöntä.

Viikonlopun partaalla kisat alkoivat. Debattikilpailuihin oli osallistunut peräti 14 eri maata. Kahden päivän aikana meidän tuli väitellä kuudesti. Kilpailut olivat laadultaan korkeatasoisia, mikä selittää miksi MeLu ei pärjännyt niissä, mutta meidän päämäärä oli erilainen; Halusimme ylittää itsemme, jossa kaikki onnistuivat. Kurssin ensimmäisellä tunnilla kaikki ihmiset eivät edes kyenneet esittelemään kunnolla itseään, mutta kisoissa samat henkilöt puhuivat lähes seitsemän minuuttia englanniksi Venäjän geopolitiikasta.

Omasta mielestäni matka oli kaikille opiskelijoille sekä hyödyllinen että hauska. Kisat osoittivat minulle, kuinka iso asia väittely on maailmalla, sillä se ei ole hirveän suosittua täällä Suomessa. Tämä matka antoi mahtavia eväitä tulevaisuuteen, esimerkiksi argumentaatiovälineitä, sujuvaa asioiden esittelyä sekä suomeksi että englanniksi ja asioiden katsomista monista eri näkökulmista.

Le journal belge – päiväkirja ranskankielisen Belgian leirikoulusta

LUNDI LE 30 SEPTEMBRE

 

Kello 5.45 oli sovittu tapaaminen lentokentällä. Moni näytti olevan yllättävän energinen aikaisesta herätyksestä huolimatta. Teimme nopeasti lähtöselvityksen ja lähdimme turvatarkastukseen. Turvatarkastuksen läpäisyn jälkeen useat meistä menivät Espresso Houseen syömään aamupalaa. Lentomatka meni rauhallisesti. Ehdimme ottaa jopa päikkärit.

Belgialaisia vohveleita

Lentokentältä päästiin nopeasti junalla hotellille ja matkalla juna-asemalta kauniita Brysselin maisemia seuraten. Rautatieasemalta kävelimme lyhyen matkan hotellille, jätimme sinne matkatavaramme sekä lähdimme lounaalle Chez Leoniin ja sieltä Grand-Placelle. Grand-Placella otimme kuvia eri kiltojen taloista ja kävelimme vähän matkan päähän Manneken Pisille, jossa nautimme myös ensimmäiset, vaan ei viimeiset, vohvelit!

Iltapäivällä Melun entinen vaihto-oppilas, Liana, tuli tapaamaan meitä hotellille. Jotkut oppilaat kiertelivät ja kävivät syömässä hänen kanssaan. Samalla muut menivät omissa porukoissaan kiertelemään ja syömään.

MARDI LE 1er OCTOBRE

 

Tiistain vietimme  tutustuen Euroopan Unionin rakennuksiin. EU-liput näyttivät olevan puolitangossa Jacques Chiracin hautajaispäivän vuoksi. Koko tiistain satoi vettä. 

Euroopan komissio

 

Ensimmäiseksi vierailimme Brysselissä sijaitsevassa Helsinki EU-Officessa.Toimistolla saimme perusteellisen esityksen Konsta Ylimaunulta. Esityksessä hän kertoi Helsinki EU-Officen toiminnasta, hänen omista työtehtävistään ja Euroopan parlamentista. Hän kertoi myös siitä, miten Helsinki EU-Officen yhteistyö toimii suomalaisten yliopistojen ja ammattikorkeakoulujen sekä maakuntien välillä.Hän rohkaisi meitä tulevaisuudessa seuraamaan omaa polkuamme ja opiskelemaan monipuolisesti eri aloja.

  

 

Euroopan parlamentti

Kattavan esityksen jälkeen menimme syömään porukoissa. Meidän kohteeksi valikoituibrasserie nimeltä The Beer Factory. Siellä söimme oikein hyvin. Ruokailun jälkeen kokoonnuimme Euroopan Parlamentin – Parlement Européen läheisyyteen. Siellä meille esiteltiin miten parlamentti toimii ja mistä/keistä se koostuu. Pääsimme jopa vierailemaan ja ottamaan valokuvia parlamenttisalissa.

Esittelyn jälkeen oli vuorossa kierros joko Magritte-museossa tai Sarjakuvamuseossa. Belgialaisen taiteilijan René Magritten töihin olimme tutustuneet jo Suomessa Amos Rexin näyttelyssä keväällä, joten oli kiinnostavaa verrata näkemiämme töitä näihin töihin. Sarjakuvamuseossa oli esillä mm. Tintti ja Smurffit, joista niistäkin tiesimme jo entuudestaan kurssilla pidetyn esitelmän vuoksi.

MERCREDI LE 2 OCTOBRE

 

Ranskankielisen Belgian leirikoulun kolmantena päivänä suunnitelmissa oli matkata Namurin kaupunkiin. Aamulla päivä kuitenkin näytti alkaneen huonosti. Koordinaatiokyky oli hukassa, kaadettiin sähköpotkulautoja ja kadulla rahaa pyytävien rahakuppeja. Alli jäi melkein auton alle ja kaakaojauhetta ei löytynyt aamupalapöydästä. Kerrassaan hieno aloitus. Käveltiin juna-asemalle aikaisin, ja jouduttiin odottamaan junaa vartti ennen kuin junamme saapui. Junalla liikkuminen Belgiassa oli aina todella kätevää!

FIFF 2019

Tunnin junamatkan jälkeen kävelimme erääseen Namurin filmifestivaalien toimipisteistä ja seurasimme mielenkiintoista lähetystä sillä välin kuin Smariksi nimetty rakas opettajakaksikkomme osti leffaliput joukkiollemme.

Seuraavaksi menimme kirkkoon katsomaan kuinka filmikoulu IAD Louvainin oppilaat esittelivät meille elokuvan kuvausta liikkuvalla kameralla.

Päätimme lounastaa omissa porukoissamme, jonka jälkeen lähdimme katsomaan filmifestivaaleihin liittyvän ranskankielisen keskusteluohjelman tekemistä.

 

Namurin filmifestivaali 2019

Lopuksi pääsimme katsomaan festivaaleilla esiintyviä elokuvia. Osa meni katsomaan kanadalaista “Jeune Juliette” – elokuvaa ja loput “Gainsbourg”- nimistä elokuvaa samannimisen muusikon elämästä. Kumpikin elokuva oli tietysti ranskan kielellä! Elokuvien jälkeen eksyskelimme reittimme takaisin juna-asemalle. Junamatka takaisin Brysseliin kului nopeasti.

JEUDI LE 3 OCTOBRE

 

Täyttävän aamupalan jälkeen  lähdettiin Brüggeen  junalla. Brügge on Belgian flaaminkielisellä puolella oleva kaupunki, jossa on paljon erilaisia kanavia ja sitä kutsutaan Pohjoisen Venetsiaksi. Aivan upea kaupunki, joka muistuttaa Hollantia ja se johtuu siitä, että Brugge sijaitsee vain 17km päässä Hollannista. 

Ensin kävelimme kaupungissa ja ihastelimme piparkakkutyyppisiä taloja, kauniita kirkkoja, söpöjä katuja ja houkuttelevia kauppoja. 

Myöhemmin meillä oli ruokatauko, jolloin söimme pastaa, salaattia ja jopa kania oluessa! Myöhemmin ehdittiin käydä ihanassa  joulukaupassa, josta ostettiin tuliaisia perheelle. Sen jälkeen lähettiin junalla takaisin Brysseliin. Iltapäivällä työstimme hotellilla meille annettuja tehtäviä. Oli erittäin kiva ja hauska päivä tänäänkin!

VENDREDI LE 4 OCTOBRE

 

Matkalla kukkulalle

Päivä alkoi aamiaisen jälkeen junamatkalla taas Belgian ranskankieliselle puolelle eli Walloniaan, aurinkoiseen Namuriin, jossa kävimme heti ensimmäisenä valtavalla kukkulalla jonka päällä sijaitsee  linnoitus Citadelle. Puolessa välissä matkaa törmäsimme ”Searching For Utopia” nimiseen patsaaseen joka esittää miestä ratsastamassa kultaisella kilpikonnalla.

Matka kukkulan huipulle oli rankka ja saimme kivuta sinne kävellen pitkiä portaita pitkin pysähdellen välillä ihailemaan maisemia ja ottamaan kuvia.

 

 

 

Lounastauon jälkeen osallistuimme taas FIFF 2019- filmifestivaaleille : kaikki menivät katsomaan elokuvaa “Adam”, joka oli arabiankielinen, ranskaksi tekstitetty kuvaus marokkolaisen naisen asemasta. Toisia meistä elokuva kosketti kovastikin. Elokuvan jälkeen palasimme ripeästi takaisin Brysseliin, koska meillä oli varattu yhteinen päivällinen ravintolassa Mozart. Siellä suurin osa valitsi spare ribbs- menun, jossa ribbsejä ja uuniperunoita sai syödä niin paljon kuin pystyi! Opettajamme jakoivat myös jokaiselle “palkinnot” opintomatkasta, kuten taiteentuntijoille ja kielitaitoisille herrasmiehille…

SAMEDI LE 5 OCTOBRE

 

Lauantaina saatoimme pakata tavaroitamme vielä aamulla ennen aamupalaa. Tämän päivän viimeinen tutustumiskohde oli vielä le Musée du Chocolat aivan Manneken Pis-patsaan lähellä, jonka opiskelijamme halusivat ehdottomasti nähdä. Kiertelimme siellä vapaasti ja tutustuimme suklaan historiaan, maistelimme erilaisia suklaita ja kuuntelimme valitsemallamme kielellä audio-opastusta. Ystävämme Liana tuli tapaamaan meitä vielä suklaamuseoonkin ja viettämään aikaa kanssamme.

Ennen lentokentälle lähtöä meillä oli vielä jonkin verran aikaa kierrellä itseksemme. Lopulta kokoonnuimme hotellille, haimme matkatavaramme ja suuntasimme – jälleen kerran – rautatieasemalle Gare Centrale. Kotimatka sai alkaa. Palautekyselyn mukaan upea porukkamme oli tyytyväinen matkan organisointiin, mahdollisuuteen tutustua uuteen kulttuuriin ja uusiin melulaisiin. MERCI A VOUS TOUS!

TWO DIFFERENT EXCHANGE EXPERIENCES

 

Karri’s greetings from the US

 

I left my home and my family and friends in Helsinki just three days after I got to know where I am heading to. I arrived to Wisconsin Rapids, WI on August 26th after spending four days in New York. Coming into a family that I had just heard of felt weird first but soon I got used to it and it feels just like a real family to me by now. Things are a bit different in the US but Wisconsin felt a lot like Finland. A lot of forests, lakes, farms and people are not so busy all the time. First Rapids felt like a small city with 20,000 people and I was feeling a bit regretful coming here and leaving everything behind, but pretty quickly I grew into this city and I like how everything is so close to me. Ice Hockey is really popular here which was like a lottery win to me and training to get to the school team was like a dream come true.

I started in school about a week after arriving to Rapids. Lincoln High School has about 1,500 students which is quite a lot compared to what I am used to. Here things are a bit different, for example in school rules are more strict, like no sleeveless shirts, knees should not be visible, phones have to be kept in the lockers and school doors are locked until the day comes to an end. People here take a lot more pride about their school and they are very close with the community and every school day begins with the pledge of allegiance. 

People are more family oriented and when not doing homework the days usually are spent doing something together outside or watching a Green Bay Packers football match. My family is not too different from home and we do not really have strict rules with them which is great. Touring around the neighbor states has been great and it still amazes how things so close can be so different. I have another exchange student from Italy living with me, called Federico. Living in a house with American, Mexican, Finnish and Italian cultures brings a lot of perspective and is really interesting. Getting friends in high school was pretty easy, partly because everyone is so interested in the new foreign students but even in this short period of time spent here I have made a lot of close friends and really integrated well in this country. Also the Finnish culture seems to be a bigger part of this state than what I thought, for example finding products in stores named in Finnish and even a town called “Little Finland” felt like a welcoming here.

Lotta’s greetings from Spain

 

Hola  from sunny Spain!

I  was a first-year student in Medialukio and now I’m living in Fuengirola. When the year started I decided that I should spend my next year as an exchange student.  

Our  family friend is a teacher at my current school and she told us everything we needed to know. Her kids whom I have known since childhood are also going to my school. The younger one is in 6th grade and the older is a year one student. First,  I was supposed to go and live on my own but my father has a flexible job so he decided to come with me. So at the end of the summer, me and my family packed up our car and drove through Europe to Spain. 

The  first day going to school was immediately different starting from when I woke up. The sun was up, it was warm and when I started walking to school there were palm trees on the way. I  was nervous because I didn’t know anybody in my class. They all seemed to know each other from before. Or so it seemed. The students in my school come and go. Some might be there for only a few months, some have been there their whole childhoods and some  are there for the whole year. Like me. The teachers were nice and the school building was nice but very small. Here in Finland, I was used to being in big schools with the fear of getting lost on the way to the class. My school in Spain has only three classrooms…  So if I get lost it’s totally on me. The differences in my school are not that big compared to Finland because it’s a Finnish school and everybody speaks Finnish. Outside the school it’s when the culture hits you. I live in a district where there are lots of Finns. But the Finnish people in my neighborhood are somehow more relaxed. You can see from far that they are from Finland but they live by the Spanish groove now. The  locals I have come to contact with are social and have lots of energy. It seems like their day is only starting when the sun is going down. All these families with small kids having dinner outside at 11 o’clock in the evening on a Tuesday. 

It  also seems like they have more holidays and celebrations. For example, there was a ”Feria” holiday in Malaga a few weeks ago. It was beautiful. So many colors and all the women wearing flamingo dresses and red roses behind their ear. The meaning of it was  to celebrate the entry in Malaga of the Catholic Kings, in August of 1487. Moreover, one thing that is displayed strongly is religion. Almost every house has religious icons outside their house. I think it’s very beautiful. Of course the main difference in my day there is that I can go swimming every day to our pool or the ocean. I mean you can do that in Finland too if you like ice… I  am learning Spanish and hope to get more chances to explore the culture here more. Another Feria vacation is coming up.

Visit to Metropolia

My visit to Metropolia

 

Students ate delicious food at the school restaurant.

It was my first time ever  to visit a university of applied sciences and I really enjoyed every minute of it. The best thing that I liked about the visit was the fact that I could really see what studying looked like there.

We visited two different campuses. The first campus was more about web design and architecture and the other one was all about movies, videos and  animation and I personally loved the first campus that we visited and my friend who was with me loved the second campus and she said that she will go there after high school.

In my opinion this seems to be a very good project first of all because sometimes when think about universities it scares many young people, we just think that people there must be genius and they are totally different then we are, we admire them. But now going there and seeing people who are like us but just older than us and see that they are studying just like we do, it gives courage. “If they can, we can, too.”

Before going there in my head I thought that I would not apply there at all, and when we arrived at the school I still had the same thought. However, when we finished our lunches and it was time for the guided tour, we went in three different classes and when they explained and showed us what they had been working on and what they had done, I literally fell in love with  the whole university of applied sciences and I even decided to apply there. Teachers looked really good and so professional. I liked that too.

Something that made me sad is the number of people who are getting accepted. 

Out of 300 applicants (for example in animation or web design) , only 60  are invited for the test and interview, and out of 60 people they only take 20 or 25! Therefore I will keep my fingers crossed and hope my dream will come true…

Visiting Metropolia university of applied sciences

 

Both of the media classes from Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Media Arts went to visit Metropolia university of applied sciences on Friday the 30th of August 2019. Our school had prepared free return bus trips that lasted altogether one hour. Both of the bus trips went really well and we arrived at Metropolia in time for lunch which was provided by our school. That day lunch was tasty and all in all good. Honourable mention is the cafeteria. It was clean, roomy and well maintained. After everyone had eaten enough of the delicious food our first tour could start. It was divided into three parts and each of them lasted around ten minutes or so. Because our group consisted of over 40 students, we were split into smaller groups just to make the tour run smoothly.

XR Design is an interesting new field of study.

We got to learn about media production and communication, web design, architecture and animation from the teachers and students. They also told us about the application process. The teachers gave us the correct information and the students gave us their perspective on it. The teachers said that there is an eight percent chance getting accepted to Metropolia. There were many students present that weren’t accepted in their first attempt but they were eager to try again which paid off.

After the first tour was over we still had one and a half hour left. All of us moved to the another campus nearby. The campus had a big theater room and there was a man waiting for us. We all could fit to the theater and there were plenty of seats for everyone. The man gave us a short lecture about what goes into a making a movie, short movie and animation. Then we got to see short movies, documentaries and animations which were made by the students of Metropolia. All of them were really well done and I think they impressed all of us. Time was running out and our visit time was ending. The day had been full of information, good company and great new memories.
